Homemade Cough Syrup

This is not a food recipe. But after a long, long time with this stupid head and chest cold that I can't seem to get rid of, this is the greatest recipe I know. I feel like sharing.

HOMEMADE COUGH SYRUP (Yes you can)

2 hard peppermint candies (starlight mints)
1 lemon wedge
2 shots whiskey
2 shots (equivalent) honey

Crush up the peppermints however you see fit. Me, I lay them on a paper plate, cover them with cling wrap, and hammer them flat. I don't even take the wrappers off. When I open the wrappers after the smashing, the centers are a nice fine peppermint powder. If there are bigger chunks, don't worry about it. You're sick, you don't care about the details.

Pour the whiskey into a mug, and add the honey. I like to use roughly equal amounts honey and whiskey, but you do whatever you feel is best. Add in the crushed up peppermint, and squeeze some lemon in. Stir it all around with a spoon. There will always be peppermint bits that stick to the bottom of the cup. That's okay, too. Everything is going to be okay.

Stick the mug in the microwave for, like, 25 seconds or so, and stir it again for good measure.

Sip slowly. Feel better.

Mom used to make this when we were kids. I always felt special when she made it, because I got to have WHISKEY, and that was for GROWN UPS. And though whiskey smells BAD, this cough syrup tastes GOOD. When you have a cough that makes your chest feel hollow and raw, this stuff will make it feel warm and good again.

And Mom was responsible. She gave us one or two spoonfuls at a time, carefully regulating our intake. But now that you're an adult, take the whole cup to bed with you and wrap up in 12 Snuggies until you are well again.

I also made a big pot of chicken noodle soup. I'll blog about that later? Yes, I'll blog about that later.
